Description of the center

The Fundació Parc Taulí (FPT) is an entity created within the Corporació Sanitària Parc Taulí, with the majority of its board members appointed in order to promote and manage aspects related to teaching, training, and research, both related to scientific-medical activities and the management and organization of healthcare activity.

The Corporació Sanitària Parc Taulí is comprised of a set of different centres that offer the whole spectrum of services necessary to meet the healthcare needs of the individuals and families residing in its referral area. It provides comprehensive health-care services to a population of approximately 400,000 inhabitants of 11 municipalities of the district of Vallés Occidental (Catalonia –Spain).  It is located in Sabadell, one of the largest cities of the district, and 20 km north-west of Barcelona.

The FPT was created in 1993 to respond to the needs of encouraging and stimulating medical, healthcare, technical, and scientific research and training by healthcare professionals, with the final goal of improving the quality of the healthcare enjoyed by the public.

The main objectives of the Fundació Parc Taulí (FPT) are to promote, foster, encourage and disseminate the research, innovation, teaching, and training projects of the professionals at the Corporació Sanitària Parc Tauli’s (CSPT) centers, services, facilities, and corporate bodies in the areas of medicine, public health, healthcare management and organization, and other related technical areas.

The high level of quality achieved led to the recognition of the FPT by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) as an affiliated University Institute in 1999 under the name Institut Universitari Parc Taulí.

The FPT’s activity has made it a pioneer institution in the areas of scientific and medical research and training, with an important impact not only locally, but also nationally and internationally through its contributions to the advancement of science.

Description of activities

A foundation that makes the world of research more dynamic
To  improve and contribute to the conditions in which research is carried out, the FPT promotes and subsidizes research projects and provides economic and administrative management for researchers, as well as assistence in the search for financing for scientific and medical research.

A foundation that strengthens teaching and training
Since its inception, one of the key aims of the Fundació has been to reinforce biomedical teaching and training, both for established professionals and those new to the field. For this reason, the FPT carries out numerous activities such as continuing education, undergraduate and postgraduate courses, grant assignment, and the organization of numerous scientific acts. Since 1999, the Fundació Parc Taulí has been recognized as a University Institute affiliated to the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).

An accessible foundation that promotes cooperation
To improve the efficacy of its operations and increase the impact of its actions, the Fundació encourages national and international ties with universities, institutions, and industries in the healthcare sector and civil society. Since its inception, the FPT has strived for integration into the economic and social fabric of its environment, has promoted the participation of professionals and patients alike, and has encouraged dialogue between them.

Research Activities

The most prominent lines in research are genetics, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, acute lung injury, endocrinology, experimental surgery, and digital imaging, among others. Apart from this, numerous clinical trials of new drugs are carried out, which helps to forge close ties with industries in the pharmaceutical sector.
Backing innovation in biomedicine represents a step beyond the desire to generate useful knowledge for society. For this reason, we work together with physicians, technologists, universities and financial institutions to achieve new products or services to solve real problems related to the health of our citizens, beginning with the use of new technologies, such as robotics, digital imaging, sensors, monitorization, and information systems, in order to improve the health and welfare of our society.

Some of our research lines in innovation are:

  • Biomedical Research
  • Biosignals and monitorization
  • New technologies applied to surgery
  • Digital Medical Image
  • Medical Devices
  • Healthcare services and processes

List of ongoing Projects

Within the areas mentioned above, the CSPT and the FPT have developed and is developing projects in:

  • Intelligent illumination for operating rooms.
  • Robotics applied to surgery.
  • Surgical instrument for endoscopic surgery, for dissection of lax spaces of connective tissue, in different surgical procedures.
  • Decision support systems for monitorization of critically ill patients.
  • Dear Mama Projects (Mammography): Medical imaging device for Biopsy.
  • RAIM products (UDIAT): Radiological Archive and Image Management. Administrative Management Programs for Diagnostic Departments.
  • OSAMCAT: Observatory of Metal Health in Catalonia
  • “Salut en Xarxa”: online healthcare information for citizens.

The FPT, in collaboration the Corporació Sanitària Parc Taulí and the City Council of Sabadell, is the prime mover of the Parc de Salut project. The Parc de Salut is destined to be a pioneer in research and innovation in the areas of medicine and health and will be centered on innovation in new technologies applied to medicine.
